Recipe: Gingerbread Bath Cookies

Copyright (c) Smell No Evil, Ltd.

3.40 ml Vanilla Bean Specks, Organic

Additional Tools:

Face Mask or Respirator
2 Stainless Steel or Glass Mixing Bowls
Stainless Steel Cookie Cutters
Waxed Paper
Rolling Pin
Rubber Gloves

Phase 1: Wearing a facial mask to protect against inhaling airborne particles, gently combine all dry ingredients, including vanilla bean specks in a stainless steel or glass bowl. You may need to sift the dry ingredients to ensure there are no lumps. Try to avoid over-agitating the dry ingredients as they are very light and will become airborne easily. SLSa can irritate air passages and should by handled in a well-ventilated area while wearing a mask or respirator for added protection.

Phase 2: In a double boiler over medium heat, melt the aloe butter. Add melted aloe butter to dry ingredients from phase 1. Add all other liquid ingredients slowly while kneading ingredients together. The mixture will begin to take on the consistency of dough.

Phase 3:  When the mass begins to hold together in your hand, you are ready to roll out the "dough". Place "dough" between 2 sheets of waxed paper, and roll out as if you were making cookies or a pie crust. Roll to a reasonably thick sheet (approx 1/4" - 1/2" thick). Thinner "dough" will crumble easily, thicker "dough" may not dry completely. Work quickly as the dough will begin to set up as you work.

Phase 4: Using a cookie cutter, cut the "dough" into individual shapes. Place on a sheet of waxed paper until you have used all of the "dough". Allow to air dry until solid. We found that the more intricate the cookie cutter was, the worse the end result, so our gingerbread "people" did not turn out and we got footballs instead! Stick to simple shapes for best results.

Phase 5: Once your bath cookies have hardened, package in an airtight container until use.

To Use: Break a Bath Cookie under warm running water and watch the foam pile-up!

You Will Need:

Additional Tools:

Face Mask or Respirator
2 Stainless Steel or Glass Mixing Bowls
Meatballer
Rubber Gloves

Phase 1: Wearing a facial mask to protect against inhaling airborne particles, gently combine all dry ingredients in a stainless steel or glass bowl. You may need to sift the dry ingredients to ensure there are no lumps. Try to avoid over-agitating the dry ingredients as they are very light and will become airborne easily. SLSa can irritate air passages and should by handled in a well-ventilated area while wearing a mask or respirator for added protection.

Phase 2: In a double boiler over medium heat, melt the cocoa butter. Add melted cocoa butter to dry ingredients from phase 1. Add all other liquid ingredients slowly while kneading ingredients together. The mixture will begin to take on the consistency of dough.

Phase 3:  When the mass begins to hold together in your hand, you are ready to add the jojoba beads. Knead jojoba beads into "dough" until fully incorporated. Alternately, you could use the jojoba beads to decorate the tops of the cookies before they dry. We found this method to be messy and that the beads did not "stick" well to the cookies.

Phase 4: Using a "meatballer" or gloved hands, form the "dough" into individual ball shapes. Place on a sheet of waxed paper until you have used all of the "dough". Apply a second piece of waxed paper to the top of each ball and press down gently to "smash" into a cookie shape. Allow to air dry until solid.

Phase 5: Once your bubble bars have hardened, package in an airtight container until use.

To Use: Break a Bubble Cookie under warm running water and watch the foam pile-up!

New! Meadowfoam Seed Oil

123RF Stock Photos
Meadowfoam seed oil is extracted from the seeds of Limnanthes alba (meadowfoam). The seeds contain 20-30% oil. Meadowfoam seed oil is extraordinarily stable, primarily because it contains over 98% long chain fatty acids.

Meadowfoam oil is widely used in cosmetic and hair-care applications due to its stability, lubricity and ability to stay on the skin. When applied to the skin, it forms a moisture barrier and will assist the skin with preventing moisture loss. Meadowfoam Seed Oil provides good emolliency without being overly greasy, making it especially popular in massage, facial and lip care products.

Quick Tips for Chapped Lips

Chapped lips can be painful and unattractive. The following tips will help keep your lips looking their best, whatever the season.
  • Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated helps prevent parched looking skin.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables. If your diet is too acidic, your skin can suffer. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables will help maintain proper pH and balances acidity.
  • Exfoliate.
    • Washcloth method: Run a clean washcloth under lukewarm water. Wring out excess water. Rub the washcloth over your lips, gently but firmly.
    • Toothbrush method: Use a soft bristled toothbrush to exfoliate. Brush lips gently using a wet toothbrush. Afterwards, apply lip balm to protect fresh skin from drying out. Repeat as needed.
    • Exfoliant method: Apply exfoliating product to lips in a circular motion. Using your index finger, move in gentle small circles all the way around the lips. Gently wipe off exfoliant with a warm washcloth. Afterwards, apply lip balm to protect fresh skin from drying out. Repeat as needed.
  • Frequently apply a coat of lip balm.
  • Apply lip balm before bed. Sleeping with lip balm on your lips overnight will often eliminate chapped lips overnight
  • Don't lick your lips; it dries them out and causes more chapping.

Benefits of Mighty Mint

Mint is an often used herb in skincare products because of it's aromatic fragrance. However, the mint family has more to offer than just a great smell!

Menthol from mint essential oil is an ingredient of many cosmetics and some perfumes. Menthol and mint essential oil are very popular in aromatherapy. Did you know that menthol is also used in cigarettes as an additive, because it blocks out the bitter taste of tobacco and soothes the throat? Menthol is widely used in cooling products such as body sprays and anti-itch creams.

In skin care products, mint is often used in skin creams, toners, body lotions and face masks. Mint is helpful in treating inflammations such as acne because of its high content of salicylic acid. This acid, which is found naturally in mint, is an active ingredient used in many skin care products. The acid loosens dead skin cells, allowing them to shed easier. This helps to prevent clogged pores, resulting in fewer pimples and clearer skin.

Mint can act as an astringent in cleansing and toning products  by shrinking skin tissue and reducing the amount of oil on the skin. These qualities make mint especially effective for oily skin types.

Does drinking water hydrate your skin? (video)

In this short video from DermTV, Dr. Neal Schultz discusses drinking water to hydrate your skin.:

  • No medical or scientific studies have demonstrated that 8 glasses of water a day will help to hydrate your skin.
  • Drinking water does not directly correlate with the appearance of your skin.
  • If your skin is dry, use a moisturizer.

Recipe: Sole Scrub

Copyright (c) Smell No Evil, Ltd.

Your feet are likely to be stuck inside your boots until spring. But, if you continue taking care of them by exfoliating on a regular basis, they'll thank you! Plus, you'll have no problem slipping back into sandals when the time comes.

You Will Need:

15 ml (1 TBS) Lemon Essential Oil

Combine dendritic salt and pumice in a glass or stainless steel mixing bowl reserved for formulating. Set aside.

In a double boiler over medium heat, combine shea butter, coconut oil and emulsifying wax until melted. Pour over salt/pumice mixture and stir well to combine. Add essential oils and combine again. Add preservative last and combine again. Package in an airtight container until use.

To Use: Apply scrub to damp feet in a circular motion, paying special attention to rough areas like heels. Rinse thoroughly. Because this scrub is emulsified, it will rinse clean without being greasy. Pat dry and moisturize feet as needed. (Works great on hands too!)
