How to properly wash your hands (Video)

A poll from The American Cleaning Institute indicates 83% of Americans want the right to choose germ-killing products such as antibacterial hand soaps. We at Smell No Evil, Ltd. make a conscious choice to NOT use antibacterial soaps because they contribute to antibiotic-resistant viruses. The Mayo Clinic reminds us to keep in mind that antibacterial soap is no more effective at killing germs than is regular soap. In this short video from DermTV, Dr. Neal Schultz explains how to properly wash your hands:

  • Choose proper water temperature
  • 10-15 seconds is more than enough time
  • Soap should not be too caustic
  • Avoid using brushes and washcloths
  • Pat hands dry, do not rub
  • Frequency - overwashing can cause rashes

    Recipe: Edible Massage Oil

    © Ivanleep | Dreamstime.com
Massage is the practice of soft tissue manipulation. The word comes from the French massage "friction of kneading," or from Arabic massa meaning "to touch, feel or handle". An older etymology may even have been the Hebrew me-sakj "to anoint with oil". Massage oil is used as an aid in this treatment to provide "slip" in the manipulation of the skin.

Edible massage oils are popular with those wishing to incorporate touch into their intimate personal relationships. Since regular fragrance oils and many essential oils are not intended to be ingested, the use of products containing these ingredients, particularly during foreplay when the skin may be kissed or licked is not recommended. The following recipe includes the use of "lip-safe" flavor fragrances commonly used in lip balms or other products which may be ingested as well as a non-sticky sweetener as an alternative to glycerin or honey.

    You Will Need:

Combine all ingredients in a PET Plastic Bottle and shake well to incorporate. Select a closure type which promotes ease of use such as a push disc cap, fine mist sprayer or a screw cap with an orifice reducer to prevent spills.
    • Over The Counter (OTC Drug Claims): Personal Lubricants are regulated as OTC Drugs, not cosmetics. Therefore, you may not recreate and sell this product legally as a lubricant without following proper channels.
    • Disclaimer: This recipe is provided as a novelty for personal use and suggests the use of approved, lip-safe raw materials. Should you decide to use this recipe in a manner other than that indicated, you do so at your own risk. Exercise caution when using this product in the presence of water such as showers, bath tubs, whirpool or jacuzzi tubs as oil can render wet surfaces slippery.

    Are your "Bath Salts" legal?

The headline screams, "Tell Your Children Fake Bath Salts Cause Death". In this industry, we are particularly concerned about these "fake" bath salts and how they affect the public view regarding cosmetics companies. On January 10th, we linked the above article from BlogHer to our Facebook Page. Two weeks later, the media is inundated with sensationalized stories implying that people are buying sea salt and snorting or injecting it.

    Here are the facts:
    • "Fake Bath Salts" is an advertising term. Its nicknames include Super Coke, Cloud 9, Ivory Wave, Boss, White Lightning, Bliss, Hurricane Charlie, Plant Food, Synthetic Cocaine, Fake Cocaine, Fake Meth, Potpourri.
    • "Fake Bath Salts" does not, in any way, refer to any salt used for legitimate bathing purposes.
    • Actual contents of "Fake Bath Salt" packets may be any of the following (legal at the time of this post) toxic chemical compounds: 3,4-Methylenedioxymethcathinone, 3,4-Methyenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), 4-Methylmethcathinone, 4-methoxymethcathinone, 4-Fluoromethcathinone, 3-Fluoromethcathinone, mephedrone.
Law enforcement officers confirm that these compounds are currently legal but can produce violence, delirium, paranoia, hallucinations, and other dangerous psychotic effects. Medical professionals say it can also produce extreme sweating, rapid heart rates, unexplained strength and endurance, severe agitation, suicidal thoughts and cardiovascular collapse.

The sudden outbreak of "bath salt" abuse may be attributed to the restriction on the sale of cold medicine. With addicts unable to mix methamphetamine from pseudoephedrine, they've turned to increasingly volatile sources for their high.

If you see articles or posts online sensationalizing "Bath Salts" as a way to get "high" please refer people to the facts regarding these compounds which are not salt and not intended for bathing. Negative connotations regarding completely safe products like Dead Sea Salt, Sea Salt, Luxury Bath Salt and other salts used for bathing purposes affect our industry and everyone who sells or uses these products. It is unfortunate that entrepreneurial drug dealers have chosen to knockoff a safe and legal product like sea salt in an effort to pull the wool over the eyes of law enforcement. However, the jig is up! Mississippi, Kentucky, and Louisiana all have proposals in the works to get the substances off of store shelves.

As of January 20, 2011, the Associated Press reports that the Senate Drug Policy Committee has passed a bill to outlaw fake bath salts and other products, containing the toxic chemicals addicts are using to get high. (The Associated Press reports this bill as Senate Bill 2226, although we have been unable to locate any such legislation).

      Be Mine...Bubbly Valentines

The basic bubble bath, sometimes called a foam bath, can be obtained by adding a product containing foaming surfactants to water and temporarily agitating it (often merely by the fall of water from a faucet). Bubble baths are popular for personal bathing because the foam insulates the bath water, keeping it warmer longer, and prevents or reduces deposits on the bath tub at and below the water level produced by soap and hard water. It can hide the body of the bather, preserving modesty. Children find foam baths amusing, so they are an enticement to get them into the bathtub, particularly if they have their very own bath products to use!

      Recipe: Gentle Toner

© Allison Kontur | Smell No Evil, Ltd.
A toner is a lotion or wash designed to cleanse the skin and shrink the appearance of pores. Most toners are formulated for use on the face and are intended to be used between a cleanser and moisturizer.

      You Will Need:

Using disposable droppers, measure essential oils into an 8 ounce PET plastic or glass bottle. Add remaining liquid ingredients, cap with a fine mist sprayer and shake well to incorporate.
      Product Usage:

Two of the most popular methods for toner application are:
      • Spray a disposable cotton round with toner until saturated. Gently wipe across face, paying special attention to problem areas like the T-zone. Discard pad when through and allow skin to dry before applying moisturizer.
      • Mist toner directly onto face, taking care to avoid eyes. Allow to dry before applying moisturizer.

      Recipe: Cocoa Bomb

© Allison Kontur | Smell No Evil, Ltd.

We love Bath Bombs, those fizzy balls you drop in the tub to turn it into a giant Alka Seltzer bath! But, we're not about to drop $6-$7 for a one-time-use bath frivolity. Good news is, bath bombs are incredibly cheap and easy to make and only require a few ingredients.

      You Will Need:
(all measurements by weight, not volume)

      0.50 oz  Kaolin Clay

Plastic Mold - We used Clear Fillable Christmas Ornaments

Phase 1: Combine dry ingredients in a heat-proof, zip close baggie. This method is preferred because it prevents the particles from becoming airborne. Citric Acid can be irritating when inhaled, so if you are using a mixing bowl, wear a protective mask and work in a well-ventilated area. Break up any lumps in the bag and mix until free-flowing and completely incorporated.

Phase 2: In a double boiler over low heat, melt the cocoa butter until no solids remain. Remove from heat. Place the baggie containing your dry ingredients inside a container like a pyrex measuring cup. Fold the edges over the rim of the measuring cup to stabilize the bag and then pour the melted cocoa butter over your dry ingredients. (This is why you need a heat-safe zipper bag).

Phase 3: Zip the baggie closed, expelling most of the air, and begin to knead the contents together. It may take a few minutes of kneading the material to get a unified mix. Open the bag and add your fragrance. Close the bag and continue kneading to incorporate your fragrance throughout the mix. When the mixture begins to hold its shape when squeezed, you are ready to mold your bath bombs.

Phase 4: Using a gloved hand, pack the mixture into your mold of choice. Be sure to pack the mold tightly so the mixture does not crumble. We sprinkled a small amount of Vanilla Bean Specks into the bottoms of our molds prior to packing to add some decoration to the finished product. Gently turn molds upside down on a cookie sheet and allow to sit for several minutes before unmolding. Timing is everything here, if you unmold too soon your bombs may crumble. If you unmold too late, you may damage the mold trying to remove your bombs.

Phase 5: Allow bath bombs to sit for a minimum of 24 hours before packaging for use. Store in an airtight container out of humidity for best results.

      Natural Body Butter - Deconstructed

      © Monika Adamczyk | Dreamstime.com
Ever wondered what a product contains in plain English? Maybe you're not sure what the purpose of a particular ingredient is. Over the next year, we will be deconstructing several of our most popular products for you in plain English.

Today we are deconstructing our #1 selling Body Butter:

      • Helliantus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil - Sunflower oil is an emolliant which also contains lecithin, tocopherols, carotenoids and waxes. Sunflower oil also has high vitamin E content.
      • Soja Hispida (Soya Bean) Oil - Soybeans have long been cultivated for their protein, oil and lecithin content, all of which make an effective moisturizing agent. Soybean oil is also rich in unsaturated fat acid, sterols, Vitamins A, E and K. Lecithin, an emulsifier, contains natural antioxidant properties.
      • Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil - Jojoba oil contains protein and minerals, as well as a waxy substance similar to collagen. Jojoba oil is also hypo-allergenic. Although called an oil, jojoba oil is actually a waxy ester.
      • De-Ionized Water - Deionized water, also known as demineralized water, is water that has had its mineral ions removed, such as cations from sodium, calcium, iron, copper and anions such as chloride and bromide. Deionization is a physical process which uses specially-manufactured ion exchange resins which bind to and filter out the mineral salts from water. Because the majority of water impurities are dissolved salts, deionization produces a high purity water that is generally similar to distilled water.
      • Natural Beeswax - Beeswax is a natural emulsifier as well as one of the oldest and purest waxes. Natural beeswax is unbleached.
      • Emulsifying Wax NF - Emulsifying Wax NF is an emulsifier combining Cetearyl Alcohol with Polysorbate 60. Emulsifiers help water and oil blend together in formulation without separating.
      • Sodium Borate - Sodium borate (Borax) acts as an emulsifier, natural preservative and buffering agent.
      • Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice - Aloe has long been considered to be a premier product for moisturizing and healing the skin.
      • Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract (Chamomile) - Chamomile Extract is believed to improve skin inflammation related to dry skin and aid in healing.
      • Disodium EDTA - Is a salt which works in this formula as a preservative, chelator and stabilizer. In personal care products, it is added to cosmetics to improve their stability toward air.
      • Phenoxyethanol and Caprylyl Glycol - In combination, these ingredients are a globally approved paraben-free, formaldehyde-free preservative for broad spectrum protection against bacteria, mold and yeast.

      Shea Butter Sale

      Save 20%

This shea butter is ivory in color and is extracted from the nuts of the shea trees which grow in the Tamale area. The soil in this region effects the trees which in turn effects the nuts which produce a shea butter which is ivory in color. The butter has a milder smoky scent than the Virgin version with a firm texture. A traditional source of nourishment, it has been used for centuries to treat burns, blemishes, eczema, wrinkles, stretch marks and other minor skin ailments. It is rich in Vitamins A and E and gentle enough to moisturize the entire body, including babies and those with sensitive skin. Shea Butter Unrefined Ivory also contains naturally occurring anti-inflammatory and sunscreen agents, making it an essential ingredient in many cosmetics.

Shea Butter Refined White has been naturally filtered and deodorized producing a product that is ready to use for any cosmetic or toiletry application. This butter is white in color with no odor and a firm texture.

Shea Oil (Shea Olein)  is also referred to as liquid shea butter. Shea Olein is obtained by the process of fractionating the natural shea butter to separate the olein (liquid) and the stearin (solid). Shea Olein is thus the liquid part of the shea butter.

Why Does Skin Get Dry In The Winter? (Video)

Have you ever wondered why our skin gets so much dryer in the winter months than normal? In this short video from DermTV, Dr. Neal Schultz explains:

      • Colder Air = Less Moisture In The Air = Dry Skin
      • Strong Cold Winds (Wind Chill) = Amplified Water Loss = Dry Skin
      • Heating Systems = Rob Moisture From The Air = Dry Skin
Trade in your regular soap for gentle cleansers that contain moisturizers. Those with sensitive skin can benefit from a soap-free regimen which includes oil-based body scrubs. Follow up with a heavier moisturizer than you would use in the summer like a cream or body butter to lock in moisture!

      Recipe: Lip Veil

Natural Lip Veil, Mocha Lip Veil, Cherry Lip Buff
Lip Veil (or Lip Gloss) is often used when a person wants to have some color on their lips, but does not want an intense, solid lipstick color effect. Lip Veil is also often used as an introduction to makeup for preteen and young teenage girls who want to wear some makeup, but are too young to wear a more intense lipstick color. Lip Veil is generally sheer (think of how a veil is see-through) and is perfect for when you want shine with a tint of color.

      You Will Need:

      0.25 ml Flavor Fragrance (optional)
0.15 cc Lip Safe Mica (optional)

Phase 1: In a double boiler over low heat, melt lip balm base for pots until liquified. Remove from heat.

Phase 2: Add optional flavor fragrance and mica and stir well to incorporate.

Phase 3: Pour into sterilized lip pots and allow to solidify before capping. This base does not make a very stiff gloss, so choose your packaging accordingly.

FYI: Lip Veil comes in a variety of forms and may be applied in different ways. It can be contained in a small cylindrical bottle and applied with a rounded or sloped applicator wand (known as a doefoot applicator), be applied with a built in lip brush, or a small jar or pot designed for application with the fingertip.

      Recipe: Hydrating Lip Buff

      © Pashok | Dreamstime.com
The purpose of using a lip scrub  or any other exfoliating agent is to remove dead skin cells that tend to dull the skin. When the skin on the lips gets excessively dry, the dead skin cells can begin to flake off, which results in peeling or chapped lips. At this point, lip balm will not help to remedy the problem unless the dead skin cells are removed first. A gentle, natural lip scrub can get the job done quickly!

      You Will Need:

5 oz Sugar (Organic) - Food Grade, Fine Grain
3 ml Flavor Fragrance Oil (optional)

Phase 1: In a double boiler over low heat, melt butters until liquid. Remove from heat source.

Phase 2: Add liquid oils and olive squalane and stir until thoroughly combined.

Phase 3: Add liquified butters and oils to sugar and combine. Add optional flavor fragrance and mix again to thoroughly incorporate ingredients.

Phase 4: Package in an airtight container until use.

To Use: Massage a generous amount onto lips using a firm, circular motion. Wipe away with a tissue or soft cloth. Although all of these ingredients are lip-safe, resist the urge to "lick off" the lip scrub as saliva will aggravate the "chapping" cycle, undoing the work you've just done. Follow up with a lip gloss or balm to seal in moisture and protect newly exfoliated skin.

1/1/11 - New Year, New You Revealed

Numerologists believe that events linked to the time 11:11 appear more often than can be explained by chance or coincidence. This belief is related to the concept of synchronicity. Other authors believe it is an auspicious sign, and others that it signals a spirit presence. The belief that it has mystical powers has been adopted by believers in New Age philosophies.

Some interesting facts about the Number 11:
      • Elevenses is a mid-morning refreshment such as tea and biscuits taken around 11:00AM.
      • Soccer, cricket, American football and field hockey are all played with teams of 11 players on the field.
      • The sun spot cycle repeats about every 11 years. Sun spots are dark spots on the surface of the sun. They occur more often during the active phase of the sun spot cycle. The spots have intense magnetic fields which are associated with magnetic storms on earth. Radio reception on earth is also affected by the sun spot cycle.
      • 11 is the fourth number that stays the same when written upside down. The first three are 0, 1 and 8. There are three more between 11 and 100.
      • In the decimal system, each digit position in a number has ten times the value of the position adjacent to it on the right. For example, in the number 11, the 1 on the left is said to be in the "tens place, " and its value is 10 times as great as that of the 1 on the right. The 1 on the right is said to be in the "units place," with the understanding that the term "unit" in our system refers to the numeral 1. Thus the number 11 is actually a coded symbol which means "one ten plus one unit." Since ten plus one is eleven, the symbol 11 represents the number eleven.
      • The largest cat is the Siberian tiger at 11 feet long.
      • In a 12 Step Program Step ELEVEN is a step of meditation and courage. After working the program for a time, many begin to report experiencing an energy, a support in difficult times, a something indefinable that is nevertheless there for us when we are feeling fear or anxiety. This is often referred to as a Higher Power. It can't be described, it can't be understood, but it is available, anytime it is needed. Courage permeates this step. It takes courage to believe. It takes courage to let go of self will. Step 11 requires the courage to trust this power and to let go of predetermined, limited, human results.
      • An interesting outcome of Einstein's theory of relativity was the discovery of dimensions of time and space that exist separately and distinct from the four dimensions we experience. In fact, these dimensions may even be in our midst but not visible to us. More recently mathematicians have shown that up to eleven dimensions may exist in the universe. Many physicists believe that there are places in the universe where time ceases to flow. One of these places is in a black hole. Now it is interesting that the Bible tells us that God dwells in a place where time does not flow. For centuries this concept was mocked by scientists. Such a place is now scientific fact.

      According to some Numerologists:
"11:11 is a pre-encoded trigger placed into our cellular memory banks prior to our descent into matter which, when activated, signifies that our time of completion is near. This refers to the completion of duality. When the 11:11 appears to you, it is your wake-up call. A direct channel opens up between you and the Invisible. When this happens, it is time to reflect on whatever you are doing for a moment and Look Larger. A transfer is in position. You can enter the Greater Reality if you wish pray or meditate and seed your future and also, you can be seeded by the Invisible. You can ask for help in some specific area of your life or simply listen quietly and receive a revelation."
Whether you believe in Numerology or not, it seems a good time on this 1st day of the 1st month of 2011 to open your mind, "ask" for help in your personal and professional lives and reflect quietly on the answers. The revelation might just surprise you!
