Benefits of Epsom Salt

Magnesium is the second-most abundant element in human cells and the fourth-most important positively charged ion in the body, so it's little wonder this low-profile mineral is so vital to good health and well being. Magnesium, a major component of Epsom Salt, also helps to regulate the activity of enzymes and performs a vital role in orchestrating many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of harmful toxins.    

Bathing in epsom salt helps to soften skin and exfoliate dead skin cells. These salts also provide magnesium, which has been shown to ease stress and create a happy, relaxed feeling. Studies show that magnesium: eases stress and improves sleep and concentration, helps muscles and nerves function properly, reduces inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps.

Sulfates, another component of epsom salt, aids in flushing toxins.

Epsom Salt is often used in bath salts, particularly in flotation therapy where high concentrations raise the bath water's specific gravity, effectively making the body more buoyant. Traditionally, it is also used to prepare foot baths, intended to soothe sore feet. Magnesium sulfate can increase the ionic strength of pure water, preventing some of the temporary skin wrinkling ("pruning") which is caused by prolonged immersion of extremities in pure water. Magnesium sulfate can also be absorbed into the skin, reducing inflammation.

Magnesium sulfate solution has also been shown to be an effective aid in the fight against blemishes and acne when applied directly to problematic areas, usually in poultice form. If combined with water and made into a cream, it can be applied to the face to remove blackheads.
