Hello HSMG 2010 Annual Conference!

After an incredibly early morning flight to Denver, I arrived at the Inverness Hotel & Conference Center to the bubbly Christine Bach and Stephanie Phelps Craig who helped get me registered. I caught part of Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun's speech before a whirlwind meet and greet of so many people who I've spoken with online via Twitter, Facebook and the DIY Skincare Blog over the years, but had never met "in person".

The best part of this conference is the familiarity members have with one another and the friendliness of the attendees and speakers. I was greeted with no less than a dozen hugs and I have been humbled by the number of people I've never met in person who have said they find me to be an inspiration through my dedication to running. The reality is, the online community (especially the indie community) is one of the driving forces behind my dedication because they really help me to be accountable! The best part about community is the ability to give and receive, and that is prevalent here in Colorado at the HSMG Conference.

Debbie May proctored an awesome speech about Creativity vs. Compliance. She discussed maintaining accountability for your company and product line through integrity. Debbie encouraged attendees to do their own research rather than to rely upon other sources for information regarding
FDA and FTC regulations. She answered a bevy of questions regarding labeling and further encouraged everyone to attend Marie Gale's speech about labeling as it seems that many people have questions about this very important aspect of the beauty industry.

I got to meet and chat with one of my idols, Kayla Fioravanti, who graciously had her son snap a photo of us! Kayla is truly what I call a "lab rat" like myself and we've discussed in the past how we dream of the perfect lab to formulate in. I was honored to get to meet her in person!

I intended to listen Joshua Onysko from Pangea Organics, but the early morning flight and the altitude combined to force me into a catnap.

The night finished out with the Wholesale Supplies Plus reception, complete with desserts and lots of prizes and I finished out the night with friends and fellow colleagues over some amazing Pomegranate Martinis.

Excited to start Day 2 and bedtime is calling me...so look for further updates later! If you are on Twitter, you can follow the soap conference via the #soapconf10 hashtag!

Recipe: Sport Wash

You Will Need:

8 oz
Bubble Wash Concentrate
8 oz Herbal Body Mist
5 ml (2.5 tsp) Enzyme Blend, Tincture (Organic)
0.25 oz - 0.50 oz
Bamboo Silk Exfoliator (optional)
10 drops Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil
5 drops Rosewood (Renewable Source) Essential Oil
3 drops
Tea Tree Essential Oil

Phase 1:
Combine Bubble Wash Concentrate and Herbal Mist in a glass or stainless steel mixing utensil. Combine thoroughly and add Enzyme Blend. Mix again to incorporate.

Phase 2:
If you wish to make an exfoliating-type soap, add your choice of exfoliant now. Sugars and/or salts will dissolve in this base, rendering them useless. We've chosen our Bamboo Silk Exfoliator. Combine thoroughly, or skip this step if you prefer a less-scrubby formula.

Phase 3:
Add Essential Oils and combine thoroughly so that all essential oils are incorporated throughout the mixture. Cover and allow to stand overnight so that the ingredients can meld together. If the mixture seemed thin before, it will thicken up after it has been allowed to sit.

Phase 4: Package and label your product for use. This is a great wash for use after a workout!

Recipe: Sea Masque

You Will Need:

Dry Materials:
4 oz Kaolin - White Clay

1 oz Kelp Powder

Liquid Materials:
1 oz Vegetable Glycerin
2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) Seaweed Tincture (Organic)
8 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil (optional)
4 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (optional)

Phase 1: Combine dry, powdered ingredients in a stainless steel or glass mixing bowl. Mix well to incorporate and add essential oils. Continue to mix well to incorporate all ingredients.
Package in an airtight container. No refrigeration is required but product should be stored in a cool, dry place away from moisture.

Phase 2: Combine liquid ingredients in a glass mixing container and incorporate well. The essential oils are optional if you wish to offset the naturally fishy odor of the kelp powder. You may omit them if you wish. Package in an amber glass bottle and store in a cool, dry place away from moisture.

To Use As A Masque:
Add 2 parts powdered product and 1 part liquid product into a small bowl and stir to blend until it forms a spreadable, thick paste (if it is too thick, add more liquid). Use a facial brush or your fingers to apply mixture to cover face and throat (avoiding eyes) and massage in a circular pattern. Allow to sit for 5 minutes and rinse to remove any residue. Apply a lightweight moisturizer.

FYI: Do not use this masque if you are allergic to seaweed. If you do not know if you are allergic, perform a patch test before applying to your face. If any irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.

Sale: Shea Olein

Shea Oil (Shea Olein) is also referred to as liquid shea butter. Shea Olein is obtained by the process of fractionating the natural shea butter to separate the olein (liquid) and the stearin (solid). Shea Olein is thus the liquid part of the shea butter.

Shea butter is a fatty extract from the seed of the Shea Tree. The extract is known to contain a number of ingredients with biological activity. This biological activity includes moisturizing and healing skin ailments. Shea Olein, an extract from the seed of the shea seed is known to contain moisturizing and healing skin ailments.
