Recipe: "Kitchen Chemist: DIY Bed Bug Spray"

At least five states have called on the Department of Defense pleading for money to get rid of bedbugs. The state of Ohio was so desperate that it petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to allow in-home use of a pesticide called propoxur, which was banned out of concern for its effect on children. That request was denied, and the problem persists.

Kayla Fioravanti is a fellow formulator with a background in Aromatherapy and was kind enough to permit us to post the following recipe that she created using essential oils and tinctures that bugs love to hate. (This recipe has been slightly modified for ease of use)

DIY Bed Bug Spray Recipe

1 gallon
Linen Spray or Herbal Mist
2 Tbsp Neem Extract

2 Tbsp
Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil
2 Tbsp Lavender Distillate (optional)

2 Tbsp
Polysorbate 20

Combine Polysorbate with Lavender Essential Oil and pour into Linen Spray Base. Add other ingredients and shake well to incorporate.

To Use: Spray liberally over bedding and linens.

This is great advice if you are in a position to hot wash the linens you are using, however, when traveling it's helpful to have some method of deterring the nasties you don't have control over!

Just hot wash your bedding an linens. However, bed bugs don't just hide in your bedding, they hide in the box spring or foundation, on the mattress, in the bed frame, under baseboard mouldings, in night stands, dressers, electronics and any tight places within walking distance of their meal and that would be you. http://www.pestcontrolcenter.com/store
