New: Buckwheat Hulls, Organic
Buckwheat hulls are a byproduct of buckwheat milling. In Japan, they are a traditional filling for pillows. For a number of years, buckwheat hull pillows have been available in the US for both sleeping and yoga/meditation applications. The hulls are durable and do not conduct or reflect heat as much as synthetic fills. They are sometimes marketed as an alternative natural fill to feathers for those with allergies. Use as a filler for natural pillows, herbal packs and cushions. Buckwheat hulls can also be mixed with other botanicals such as lavender or eucalyptus for use as eye pillows or herbal packs. These certified organic Buckwheat hulls are an economic and environmentally safe solution to traditional polyester-based fills.

Recipe: Endless Summer Fruity Facial Masque

Endless Summer Fruity Facial Masque
brought to you by: Pennie Mills, Ladies Blend Design Studio
This is a beautiful aromatic, effective facial masque that can be prepared quite easily and in less than five minutes. It is loaded with beneficial nutrients, antioxidants, plus it feels cool and luscious on the skin. I think you will be amazed at how soft, supple and beautiful your skin looks and feels after this homemade facial masque.
Ingredients:
- Equal parts Mango & Kiwi flesh (organic if possible)
- Organic Cocoa Powder-1/2 teaspoon
- Use a shallow dish to mix up the masque.
- Peel and chop the mango and kiwi flesh very fine, then mash it up well with a fork.
- Add the cocoa powder.
- Mix everything together.
- Using a circulation motion, apply this mixture to face and neck with your fingers. There may be little chunky bits, don't worry about those, just massage them into your skin, the kiwi seeds will help to gently exfoliate.
- Leave on for about 5-10 minutes or until it dries.
- Tissue off the bulk and rinse well with warm water.
- Pat skin dry and moisturize.
- Kiwi is rich in Vitamin A, B complex, C, E, calcium, iron and folic acid; the tiny tender seeds assist with gentle exfoliation.
- Mangoes are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They contain an enzyme which helps to unblock pores and whisk away dead cells, smooths and rejuvenates dry skin.
- Cocoa powder is high in antioxidants and aids in gentle exfoliation.
- Mix this recipe, just before you are ready to use it.
- If you have extra left, discard it, share with someone or use it on other areas.
- If your skin is super sensitive or if the mixture is too thin, add some ground oatmeal (to soothe and/or thicken) to the recipe.
Make sure you check out the beautiful handmade jewelry and candles at Pennie's website: Ladies Blend Design Studio

2009 Fall Color Trends

Yellow was pegged to be a trendsetter in 2009 and the same trend carries through as we enter fall. Bright yellows of spring and summer are giving way to more golden hues. Speaking to current economic conditions, we can expect to see more subdued versions of traditional (and not so traditional) autumn & winter hues.
Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, releases a guide each year at no charge. Each season, Pantone surveys the designers of New York Fashion Week to determine the 10 most directional colors. You can download the entire PANTONE® Fashion Color Report Fall 2009 (as a printable pdf).

Operation Confectioner's Sugar
A case of confectioners sugar mistakenly arrived with our organic cane sugar shipment. The vendor didn't think it was worth it to return the case, they told us to keep it....so, we were stuck with a case of confectioner's (powdered) sugar. We have had a lot of fun this week, formulating crazy ideas for skincare products that incorporate powdered sugar...you may have seen some of our concoctions on the blog: Your mission, should you choose to accept it...is to send us your skincare recipe ideas that include confectioner's (powdered) sugar as an ingredient!

Recipe: Cherry Cola Lip Buff
You will need: 1 oz Organic Confectioners Sugar
1 oz Organic Cane Sugar
0.50 oz Behenyl Alcohol
1 oz Castor Oil (1st Press)
0.50 oz Olive Butter
5 ml (1 tsp) Carnauba Wax
5 ml (1 tsp) Vegetable Glycerin
5 ml (1 tsp) Polysorbate 20
0.15 cc Cola Flavor Fragrance
0.15 cc Cherry Bomb Flavor Fragrance
Phase 1: In a double boiler over low heat, combine behenyl alcohol, carnauba wax, castor oil, olive butter, glycerin & polysorbate 20 until melted clear. Set aside.

Phase 2: Sift confectioners sugar into a glass or stainless bowl and fold in cane sugar. Pour melted mixture from Phase 1 over sugars & combine. Allow to cool.
Phase 3: Add flavor fragrance and combine well before packaging in small jars. Provide a spatula for the user to scoop enough product for a single use without contaminating the jar.
To Use: Apply a small dab of the scrub to your lips and gently massage with your finger. When you are finished scrubbing, rinse with water and wipe away any excess scrub. It is a good idea to add a dab of gloss or balm after this treatment to seal moisture into freshly exfoliated lips!

Recipe: Simple Tub Soak
You will need:2 oz Confectioner's Sugar
4 oz Dead Sea Salt
2 oz Tapioca Starch
2 oz Sodium Bicarbonate
5 ml (1 tsp) Tocopherol T50 (Vitamin E)
1 oz Jojoba Oil, Clear (Organic)
5 ml (1 tsp) Aloe Vera Powder
2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) Allantoin USP
5 ml (1 tsp) Oat Straw, Tincture (Organic)
5 ml (1 tsp) Orchard Peach Natural Fragrance Oil
Colorant (optional) [We used FD&C Yellow #6 - Liquid]
Phase 1: Combine jojoba oil, tocopherol, fragrance & oat straw tincture together in a glass mixing utensil. Set aside.
Phase 2: Place tapioca starch in a blender reserved for formulating (it is helpful if your blender has a top with a removable plug in the center). Cap your blender and with blades on, pour oil mixture from Phase 1 through center of lid and mix until thoroughly combined. The tapioca starch should still be powder-like in appearance and may look slightly lumpy. If it looks like a paste or has the consistency of tiny balls, you have used too much oil. (It is imperative that you weigh all of your ingredients for your recipe to turn out successfully.) Pour tapioca starch/oil blend into a sterile glass or stainless steel bowl and set aside.

Phase 3: Sift confectioners sugar into a sterile stainless steel mixing utensil. Fold in dead sea salt, sodium bicarbonate, aloe vera powder & allantoin powder, making sure to wear a mask to avoid inhaling airborne particles.
Phase 4: Add dry ingredients from Phase 3 to the tapioca starch mixture from Phase 2. Using gloved hands, mix ingredients gently until thoroughly combined.
Phase 5: Package in an airtight container.
To Use: Measure out product into a very warm bath water. Soak for 15-30 minutes before rinsing, toweling off and applying moisturizer. We used 1/4-1/2 cup per bath.

Stay Hydrated with SIGG!
Water is your body's principal chemical component, making up, on average, 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.
Like most people, I'm guilty of not hydrating as much as I should. I've had an Eco-Friendly, reuseable SIGG water bottle for over a year and yet, couldn't bring myself to actually use it. With all of the hot, humid weather we've had this summer, I found that I'm sweating more than usual during my workouts (as well as throughout the day) so I make it a point to carry a bottle of water everywhere I go!
Since I don't want to contribute to the landfill, my 33oz (1L) SIGG bottle is perfect! Plus, it helps me keep tabs on how much water I drink each day. And, with hundreds of color, pattern and size options you can get a bottle that matches your personality too!
